Six Day Outlook...

Here's your forecast for the next six days here in South Central Michigan:

Keep an umbrella close by tonight and tomorrow!

Plenty Of Rain...

A warm front is climbing into Michigan from south to north, and bringing plenty of rain with it.  Grand Rapids NEXRAD radar shows a line of showers with a couple of embedded storms in it.  Here's a look at that...

That's where the warm front is located at, and the showers (along with a maybe a thunderstorm) will continue off and on all night and into tomorrow, and there's even a small chance at some severe weather for Sunday.

Gusty winds tonight, temperatures have climbed into the 60's in most areas, and Jackson is reporting 59 at this hour.  I am owning a bust right now for today's high, as I didn't think we'd get close to 60 today, 55was as good as I figured it would get, but here I am being proven wrong.  We are actually 10-15 degrees warmer now than we were during the day today.  Here's my forecast for tonight...

We'll have a forecast later tomorrow morning as I will be traveling before daybreak.  Have a great night!

HIGH WIND ADVISORY, BRANCH, HILLSDALE

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Advisory for Branch and Hillsdale counties until 8PM EDT tomorrow night.  Wind gust forecasts have increased to 45 MPH for tomorrow.  Secure anything you don't want blown around or away, and if you drive a high profile vehicle, use caution.

College Football GameCAST

OK, all of you University of Michigan fans...here's what gametime against the University of Illinois should look like:

It's Homecoming 2012 in Ann Arbor at The Big House...

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), With A Twist....

Good Afternoon!

I know that the title of this post is a bit unusual.  It's a computer term that describes the ideal kind of interface for a person to interact with a machine.  It also describes the weather in a neat package for the next couple of days.  It's gray and rainy in the area right now, pretty much anyplace you look out the window, and that's the way it will stay for the next couple of days.  The twist?  The mercury goes up instead of down as the rain rolls in...Let's take a deeper dive and see what's going on...

BIG PICTURE:  We have a pretty strong low tracking right at us from the southwest, but the somewhat unusual feature is a warm front leading the charge this way right now.  Computer models indicate he'll be pretty much on top of us tomorrow evening.  Temperatures will fluctuate some as the low gets to us, pushing a warm front through first, then a cold front behind that.  You see showers and a couple of embedded thunderstorms working back toward Indiana, Illinois and Missouri as you check out the radars that direction.  I don't think we get any widespread storm activity, but we may get just enough warm and unstable air to kick off a thunderstorm, but if we do have one or two they'll be buried.

TEMPERATURES:  We are chilly right now, but expect the mercury to actually climb as we progress toward Sunday.  Temperatures are 10-15 degrees warmer on the back side of the front, so when the breezes start to swing around to the southwest, that's your cue the surface boundary is close by.  Take a look at the current observations around the Midwest right now and you'll see what I mean...

Visible Satellite Image with Surface Observation Overlay
Warmer air is not far off - down in Indiana, South Bend reporting 52 degrees, Fort Wayne reporting 50, and a bit further off in Illinois, Chicago and Kankakee are checking in at 55.  Forecast modeling is suggesting we see 72 tomorrow here in Jackson, but I think that's a little ambitious, given the rain that will stick around.  Upper 60's look more realistic to me, and I'm going with 68 as the high for tomorrow.  After that, temperatures start to yo-yo again between the 50's and 60's for daytime highs, with lows generally trending in the upper 30's or lower 40's for the nighttime.

RAIN:  Yep.  Not a problem there.  We'll have steady rains for the bulk of Saturday, making for a dreary and wet college football game day in the area, then we start to develop some spacing between showers late tonight and into tomorrow after the warmer air rolls in.  Look at those rain totals on the National Weather Service 5 Day Precipitation Forecast:

5 Day Precipitation Forecast
Better than 3 inches of rain northwest of us where the low is expected to march through, around here, anywhere from an inch and-a-quarter to nearly 2 inches depending on your locale.  Keep the umbrellas handy, as I think forecast models have a bit better handle on the likely rain output as opposed to high temperatures this go-round.

SEVERE WEATHER:  Don't expect any severe weather issues out of this system here in Michigan.  The Storm Prediction Center did mention a low 5% risk of severe weather in extreme southeast Michigan,  Monroe and Lenawee counties basically, but beyond that, just some soaking rain.  If anything does come of it, look for damaging wind as your severe weather mode.  The better risk is due south, in central and southern Indiana, Illinois and Ohio, where SPC has added a "slight" risk for severe weather tomorrow.

There's plenty of shower activity to see on Grand Rapids NEXRAD radar right now, even though the south zone of the blog is about to catch a bit of a break until another organized shower group comes through later on...

Grand Rapids NEXRAD Reflectivity Image
No need to show you the satellite again, as the earlier slide showed the pervasive cloudiness around the state.

Here's the forecast for Jackson and vicinity.  For the rest of today, cloudy skies, showers a with couple of breaks, high 55 (that shows up later today), winds becoming SW and increasing to 10-20 MPH.

Tonight, cloudy skies, numerous showers, temperatures hold almost steady, nighttime low 54, winds hold steady, SW 10-20 MPH.

Sunday, continued cloudy, numerous showers again and perhaps a buried thunderstorm, but the showers slowly become more spaced and scattered, as the day progresses, high 67, winds 10-20 MPH with some gusts to 25 MPH.

Sunday night, cloudy skies, scattered rain showers linger, nighttime lows near 42, winds swing around northwesterly and taper off, as the cold front comes through, 7-12 MPH.

Back to work Monday with cloudy skies, scattered to numerous showers, high only 53.

Tuesday, finally some clearing skies, becoming sunny, high 54.

Wednesday, partly to mostly sunny with a few passing clouds, high 59.

Thursday, mostly cloudy skies with a chance at some scattered showers, high 56.

Friday, partly sunny skies, a couple of stray showers may move through during the day, high 54.

There's your six-day forecast, I do hope you have a wonderful Saturday, if you're heading out for football, stay warm, stay dry!  Blessings.

HIGH WIND ADVISORY

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Advisory until 6PM for the following counties in the South Central Michigan Weather Zone:

Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Jackson

Gusty winds up to 45 MPH are likely in these areas, they will quickly subside late.  Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use caution while traveling.

Quick Look At Thursday

Good Morning!

Chilly in the area right now, some changes are in the works though:  Here's my forecast for today:

Plenty of sunshine to go around today, but the lack of clouds will make for a chilly night, and the winds swinging around to the northwest don't help much either.  Full details are in the post below.  Have a great Thursday!

Sun Now, A Mixed Bag For The Weekend....

Good Morning!

A chilly night indeed in the area, with more than a few places reporting sub-freezing temperatures.  In fact a freeze warning was issued for Lenawee, Livingston, Shiawassee and Washtenaw counties until early this morning.  We'll keep the cool air around during the nights, but a warm-up is on the way.  And a severe weather risk is evolving southwest of us.  Let's pop the hood and see what we have going on under there...

TEMPERATURES:  Computer models are in good agreement that we get some high pressure in here the next couple of days, which will set up bright sunny days and clear, cold nights.  We're looking at nighttime lows in the 30's and daytime highs that are seasonable, in the 50's or lower 60's.  That being said, modeling is hinting at a possible 70 this weekend on Sunday!  After that we should hover in the upper 50's and lower 60's, so overall, a seasonable weather pattern.  Just keep an extra blanket handy for the evenings, or find someone or something to snuggle with!

RAIN:  We'll see a chance at some weekend rain this go-round.  Friday night high school football looks cool and dry, but your Saturday afternoon and evening college games are the ones that you'll have to worry about getting wet at, and that carries over into at least a little bit of Sunday.  Here's the five day precipitation forecast from the National Weather Service:

5 Day Precipitation Forecast
You see that most areas in the blog are coming in at about an inch of rain for the next five days.  I think what should hold fairly steady as we get additional data and get closer to the weekend, but the surface high that is coming this way will play a role in how much rain we get, depending as always on his timing and track.  I would plan on at least three-quarters of an inch of rain on the low side through early next week.

SEVERE WEATHER:  Nothing in this part of the world for the next three days at the moment, but I will say that the Storm Prediction Center is forecasting possible severe weather from Illinois and Wisconsin on back into the Plains.  Here's a look at that map for you:

Severe Weather Forecast Map Day 3 (Valid 8AM Saturday)
High dewpoint values mean lots of moist air around for a fairly strong surface low that is forecast to be in the area to play with and upset, likely kicking off some strong or even severe storms.  As we roll through the day today we'll know more about that.

Here's a look at the visible satellite image with NEXRAD composite overlaid on it...

Visible Satellite with NEXRAD Composite Overlay
You can see some showers and maybe a buried storm north of Saginaw and Clare as an upper disturbance moves through the area.  South of I-96 in our part of the world though, clear and cool.

Here's the forecast for Jackson and surrounding areas including Parma and Grass Lake:

Today, sunny skies, seasonably cool, high 57, winds SW 7-14 MPH.

Tonight, clear skies, chilly, nighttime lows near 33, winds NW 6-12 MPH.

Friday, clear skies to start, then clouds increase during the afternoon, not as warm, high 51, winds ESE 4-9 MPH.

Friday night, mainly cloudy skies, a couple of showers early during high school football cannot be ruled out, low 32, winds ESE 7-14 MPH.

Saturday, a couple of peeks of sun, but mainly cloudy skies, a couple of showers possible, high 57.

Sunday, cloudy skies but mild, a 50/50 chance of scattered showers and perhaps a deeply buried storm, high 69.

Monday, skies slowly clearing as the day progresses, not as warm, an outside chance of a lone shower, high 59.

Tuesday, partly sunny skies, seasonably mild, high 62

Wednesday, starting sunny, but then clouds increase with a chance of a few widely scattered showers later in the day, high 61.

There's your forecast for the next six days, I do hope that you have a great Thursday!  Blessings.

Quick Look For Tuesday

Good Morning!

Just a quick look at today's forecast for you.  We'll see some increasing clouds as the day wears on, and then a shot at some rain late tonight and into Wednesday morning.

It's almost 10 degrees warmer now than it was yesterday at 8:30AM, with temperatures south of I-96 pretty much in the 40's across the board, Ann Arbor is the lone exception at 29 degrees.

Here's the forecast for today:

I hope you have a great day!

Monday Nite Update

Good Evening!

With some time to look at some weather data as a sunny and crisp fall day winds down, a bit of warming is on the way.  Temperatures are in the low or mid 50's at all reporting stations in the blog area at 6PM.  We'll see those values drop off rather quickly under a clear sky tonight, though we don't expect it to be a chilly as it was last night and into the pre-dawn hours for Tuesday.

It looks like Wednesday morning will be the next credible chance of shower activity in the area, with forecast modeling indicating a few widely scattered showers moving through early Wednesday, then once we get through that, a moderating trend takes hold and we stay in the upper 50's or 60's for the latter half of the week, until Saturday when our next chance for rain comes in.

Here's my forecast for tonight:

Have a great evening!

Quick Look For Monday

Good Morning!

Back to work on a chilly autumn morning that feels more like the start of winter than fall.  Pretty much every lawn or field in the blog area, along with most cars, will have some frost on the surface as temperatures fell below freezing in many areas during the overnight hours.  The warm spot south of I-96 at this hour is Grand Rapids, reporting 37 under mostly cloudy skies.  Here's a look at the forecast for today:

Expect a cool and refreshing fall day today, and also expect the temperature to yo-yo between lower to mid 50's for daytime highs until the latter half of the week, when 60's gain a foothold in here.  I hope you have a great Monday!

Quick Forecast For Sunday!

Chilly weather has settled into the area, it will moderate during the day, but the nights will hover near or below freezing for the next few days.  Here's my forecast for today, and the six day outlook as well:

Have a GREAT Sunday!
