Quick Look For Saturday

Good Morning!

As expected, we have temperatures in the 20's and some light snow falling in the area at this hour.  We will keep that around until early afternoon, then see it slowly start to wind down.  The accumulation totals still look good, with about an inch and a half of new snow on the high side.  The snow did manage to migrate further north than it originally looked like it would, so the north zone of the blog will get a taste of this as well.  I expect that totals should remain around half to three-quarters of an inch of new snowfall in that part of the world.  Take a look at this radar still image:

Detroit NEXRAD Radar
Here you see the snow that is currently impacting us. I chose to show you the Detroit image as it is seeing better than the Grand Rapids radar right now.  Precipitation chances drop off for Sunday and Monday, and then it looks like we ring in the New Year with clouds and some more snow.

Here's my forecast for today:

I hope that you have a great Saturday!  Blessings.

After Christmas Storm Stuff...

As promised, some snow totals for you from the storm on the 26th.  This graphic is in the public domain, it was found on the Grand Rapids National Weather Service Page.  I don't own it.  I did edit it by adding the list of totals.

Have a good one!

A Steady Diet Of Cold Shoulder....

Good Evening!

Good News!!!  The Winter Weather Advisory has been canceled by the National Weather Service.  NEXRAD Doppler radar is just showing a bit of light snow throughout the area, with a good chunk of that coming in as lake effect snow.  Take a look at the current image:

Grand Rapids NEXRAD Radar
We'll see mostly cloudy skies tonight with just a break or two for some brief moonlight, and we should not see much if any more snow accumulation.  Speaking of snow totals, I have information from the National Weather Service about the day after Christmas storm.  I will post that in a separate entry.

Let's take a deeper dive and see what's cooking for the weekend and beyond...

SUMMARY:  After we get through tomorrow afternoon, a quieter, snow-free pattern emerges briefly.  An upper disturbance moves through tonight, it's part of a trough that will be shoveling it's way into the midwest, and opening the door for some colder air as well.  We will see our first truly polar air come in around midweek, with mid-range computer forecast models keeping us well below freezing, and even below 20 next week!

SNOW:  The upper disturbance rotating through the area gives us a chance at some light snow, especially in the southeast corner of the blog.  This will be a concern primarily for the south zone of the blog.  Areas south of I-96 and east of I-69 will see the best chance at some light snow.  I expect any new snow to stay at or below an inch and a half.  Clinton, Shiawassee, and Eaton counties should stay out of the snow, and the southern half of Ingham and Livingston should pick up some light snowfall.  I expect areas along and south of I-94 to have the most accumulation, but this will be a far cry from the after Christmas storm.  Put simply, snow chances drop dramatically after lunchtime tomorrow, though we keep a mention of a stray flurry or some light snow in the forecast from New Year's Day on.

NEW YEAR'S HOLIDAY:  New Year's Eve on Monday looks to be mostly cloudy with temperatures around freezing, same for New Year's Day, with just the mention of some light snowflakes required at this time.  Monday will also be the warmest day of the next five.  You can forget about seeing the freezing mark for awhile after Monday.

Here's a look at the forecast for Jackson and surrounding areas including Rives Junction and Concord:

And looking ahead into 2013...

I do hope that you have a great weekend as we wind down 2012 and say hello to 2013!  Blessings!

Special Weather Statement - Washtenaw, Shiawassee, Livingston

The National Weather Service Detroit is advising that light snow coming into the area from the southwest may cause some travel issues and accumulate up to an inch or so.  Use caution if traveling!

Special Weather Statement - Branch, Hillsdale

The National Weather Service Northern Indiana advises that a band of moderate snow is working through the area, 1-2" of snowfall is expected.  Use caution when traveling.

Quick Look For Friday

Good Morning!

We have an upper disturbance moving through later today that will touch off some light to moderate snow for part of the area.  There are five counties under a Winter Weather Advisory starting after lunch and continuing through Saturday morning.  They are: Jackson, Calhoun, Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton.  Here's the forecast for today:

I hope that you have a great day!

Thursday Update

Well, clouds dissipated from north to south this morning in the area, warming our temperatures a bit, and busting my forecast.  We should see partly to mainly sunny skies this afternoon and highs around 33.  I have not had the chance to do snowfall totals for you yet, those are forthcoming!

Quick Look For Thursday

Good Morning!

Our White Christmas showed up a day late.  Most places around the area received 2-4" of snow over the last 24 hours.  I will look at some snowfall data and have a full rundown for you later on.

Here's a look at how things will stack up for you today:

Looking ahead for the next few days, chilly and cloudy are the words that come to mind.  Mid-range computer forecast models keep us at or below freezing for the next week or so with variable cloudiness and a chance at more light snow over the weekend.

Have a great Thursday!!!

36 Hour Forecast...

Here's a look at how things will shape up in the area for the next 36 hours...

You need to know all counties in the blog will be under a Winter Weather Advisory starting tomorrow morning.  Be safe as you go back to work or shop the after Christmas sales!

Snow On The Way...

Good Afternoon and Merry Christmas!

I hope that you got everything you wanted in your stocking.  I also hope that you remember friends and family and those who may be not as well off as you or have lost loved ones during the holiday season.

The clouds in my summary didn't stay as I thought they would, it's sunny here this afternoon in Jackson.  We'll see clouds start to redevelop as the evening wears on, all of this in advance of a low and a frontal system this is currently causing headaches in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.  Unlike in the Deep South, our precipitation will be of the snow variety, and we look to pick up more than a couple of inches.

SUMMARY:  The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for every county in the blog.  The pre-christmas event, we escaped with mostly rain, but picking up a coating to an inch of snow.  This time, we are firmly on the cold side of the low, so we'll pick up some snow.  Temperatures are right around freezing, and there they shall stay for the next several days, until next week when we see temperatures struggle to break 30 degrees.

SNOW:  Forecast modeling suggests that we start to see snow late tomorrow morning or shortly after lunch as you hit the after Christmas sales.  We'll see snow start in the southern tier of counties and spread north and east.  We keep the snow around for the balance of the day, and it should be gone by pre-dawn on Thursday.  When it's all done, most places should have a new 3 to 6 inches of snow on the ground.  I think that the north zone of the blog will be closer to 3-4 inches as opposed to the south zone,

Directly to the forecast for Jackson and vicinity.

Tonight, increasing clouds, cold, perhaps some flurries or light snow, especially south, nighttime lows roll back to 23, wind NE increasing 10-15 MPH.

Wednesday, cloudy skies, snow developing late morning or early afternoon from south to north.  Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Wednesday, high 30, wind NE increasing to 15-30 MPH.

Wednesday night, Winter Weather Advisory continues snow continuing under cloudy skies, tapering off late.  Accumulation could be as much as 6" in some areas, 2 to 4 inches in Jackson, up to three inches in Lansing.  Lows drop to 22.  Winds NE 5-10 MPH.

Thursday, cloudy skies, any lingering flurries will taper off by lunchtime, high 31, winds NNW 4-8 MPH.

I am working on the six day forecast for you, I hope you have a great evening!  Be safe!

Christmas Snapshot

It's Christmas Eve...

My little one is sound asleep with her Santa Trap all set - sleigh bells on the bottom of the tree.  Sneaky ol' Santa will slip in and out, quiet as can be though.  I hope your Christmas is filled with joy and wonder as well!

We got some snow around here to make it a White Christmas this year.  The road conditions as a result aren't much fun though.  Untreated roads were slippery, both stopping and starting.  Use caution if you travel to relatives for dinner tomorrow, as you may still have some slick spots, especially on back roads.  Let's look and see what's running under the hood:

CHRISTMAS DAY:  We'll see mainly cloudy skies, with perhaps a couple of breaks for a brief cameo or two of sun.  Temperatures will stick close to the freezing mark.  The good news is no more snow expected for the moment.  More on that below. Judging by the amount of snow on the car before cleaning it to depart from work, we got about an inch to an inch and a half of snow, i'll need to look at some reports to get an official total for you.  Late Christmas night into Wednesday morning, some changes are definitely in the cards.

HUMP DAY & BEYOND:  We hold temperatures in the 30's, snow chances go up Wednesday afternoon, and we may see two to four inches of snow in Jackson.  North zone areas should stay right around three inches or less, but the far south counties of Branch, Hillsdale and Lenawee could see snow totals over four inches.  A surface low is forecast to track though Louisiana, clip Alabama, then turn left and head northeast.  We'll be on the cold side of the system this time, so we won't get a pass on the snow as we basically did over the weekend.  After that slides off to the east, not much sun, a chance at snow pretty much every day for the next week, and real cold on the way, with forecast models suggesting daytime highs only in the 20's next week.

I will put a forecast up for you later this Christmas Day.  Enjoy it!
