Cold (Post) Turkey...

Good Evening!

I hope that everyone has had a relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday with family and/or friends.  I also hope that you have much to be thankful for this go-round.  If you're planning on heading out for the Black Friday door-buster specials at the retailers, just make sure you have a warm coat with you, as Mother Nature has a door-buster special of her own planned for this part of the world.  One deeper dive coming up:

SUMMARY:  Our mild weather and unseasonably warm Turkey Day has faded into memory, as the cover of darkness will usher in changing wind direction and sharply colder temperatures.  Tomorrow, a whole new ball game.  The mild readings were very nice while they lasted!  We'll slice our thermometer readings basically in half, and cold wintry weather settles in for the foreseeable future.  Lower 40's for the high temperature tomorrow, then the mercury continues it's southward slide.  We see one last over 40 day this weekend, then that's it.  Temperatures max out at around 38 degrees for the next several days.  A trough is knocking on the door at this hour, digging southeast out of Canada toward us, and bringing some chilly polar air with it, as winds turn from south to northwest.

PRECIPITATION:  We pick up a brief spell of rain showers tonight, and that should about do it for precipitation until early next week.  Monday and Tuesday we'll have a crack at a wintry mix of precipitation, with temperatures in the mid to upper 30's.  For my money, I'm thinking we'll see a better shot at rain as opposed to snow, but we'll have to wait until the weekend to firm that up some.

Let's take a look at the forecast for Jackson and surrounding communities including Pleasant Lake and Michigan Center...

Tonight, cloudy, perhaps a stray shower lingering, cooler, lows near 39, winds W 10-15 MPH.

Black Friday, cloudy, much cooler, 25% chance of scattered showers, high 41, winds WNW 10-15 MPH.

Friday night, cloudy and cold, lows near 23.  Wind NW 7-12 MPH.

Saturday, more clouds than sun, chilly, high 36.  Wind NW 6-12 MPH.

Saturday night, a mix of clouds and stars, colder still, low 23, winds NW 4-8 MPH.

Sunday, partly sunny, warmer, high 41

Monday, partly cloudy, perhaps a flurry or two, high 37.

Tuesday, mostly cloudy, a 50/50 shot at some light snow, high 38.

Wednesday, partly to mostly sunny, not as warm, high 36.

There's a look at your six day forecast, I do hope that you have a great night, BE SAFE ON FRIDAY!  Blessings.

Changes On The Way

We will have some big changes over the next several hours.  I am looking at data and trying to not nod off from dinner!  Black Friday and weekend forecast comes later tonight!

Quiet Thanksgiving, Cold Weekend!

Good Morning!

A cloudy start to the day here in the blog area.  Mild readings hang out for awhile longer, so while the holiday looks great, we shuffle the deck a bit for the holiday weekend.  Let me pop the hood and we'll see what we have...

SUMMARY:  Not a whole lot of change from the post yesterday to speak of.  As I write this, we do have some scattered showers coming and going in the blog area, with mainly cloudy skies, though I see some patches of blue sky right outside the window off to the northwest.  We'll stay in this pattern today then it will just be mostly cloudy tonight.

GETAWAY DAY AND TURKEY DAY:  Tomorrow will be the biggest travel day of the year, as everyone takes to the road and in some cases the skies, to be with loved ones for Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas season.  The forecast to come into or get out of south central Michigan looks good!  Sunshine moves in after lunchtime with a high in the mid 50's.  Rain not expected tomorrow or Thanksgiving Day for that matter, with sunshine and temperatures pushing 60 on tap for Thursday!  The only place you'll have some travel headaches is if your car or plane are bound for the Pacific Northwest, as a strong low is spinning off the coast of Washington and British Columbia, bringing gloomy and stormy weather to that part of the world.  Now, late Thursday here in Michigan, things start to change.  Let's talk about that.

PRECIPITATION:  Early Friday, a low pressure center that's dragging a cold front with it will be sitting in Canada just above Lake Superior.  That low is out ahead of a trough that will be shoveling his way in here hard from the northwest.  As it all gets here, winds turn northwesterly and the door opens for some cold polar air.  The air getting bulldozed east will have been almost 60 degrees, so when the cold front comes in and halves those readings, expect some rain, then as we get down by the freezing mark in the lowest part of the atmosphere, perhaps some light snow.  I don't see much snow out of the deal if we get any, just some flurries, or maybe a dusting to a quarter-inch on the high side.  Let's take a look at the National Weather Service five day forecast:

5 Day Precipitation Forecast
Our precipitation will be mainly in the top half of the Lower Peninsula and the U.P., with flurries or nothing as you work south of I-94.  We get lucky in that while we have a big temperature swing setting up, it doesn't appear that we add a lot of moist air to the mix, otherwise that front would cause more than a few headaches.

The visible satellite shows clouds over the area right now, but there are some breaks here and there, so even though the quick look forecast graphic says overcast, peeks of sun are possible depending where you're at...

Here's a look at the current temperatures in the area:

And this is the forecast for Jackson and surrounding areas including Parma and Hanover-Horton:

Today, mainly cloudy skies, you'll see a peek of sun here and there though, a stray shower can't be ruled out, high 55, winds S calm to 5 MPH.

Tonight, skies clearing, nighttime low near 40 again, south winds stay calm to 5 MPH.

Wednesday, some clouds early, then becoming mostly sunny, continued unseasonably mild, high 57.  Winds variable, calm to 5 MPH.

Wednesday night, mainly clear skies, low around 41, winds variable, calm to 5 MPH.

Thanksgiving Day, give thanks for mostly sunny skies and mild spring-like conditions, temperatures near 58, some spots could post a 60.

Black Friday, changes happen, cloudy skies with a few scattered showers early, then cloudy and cooler, high  46.

Saturday, a mix of clouds and sunshine, sharply cooler, temperatures fall back to a bit below normal, with a high of only 38.

Sunday, skies continue partly sunny, high of 40.

Monday, a mix of clouds and sunshine, seasonable, high 41.

There's a look at your forecast for the next six days, I do hope that you have a great day!  Blessings.

Quick Look At Tuesday

Good Morning!

A gray sky and mild conditions greet us this Tuesday.  We keep them around or a bit with some stray raindrops here and there.  Here's my forecast for today:

I have a full discussion and summary in the works!  Have a good one.

Quiet Pre-Holiday Weather Continues...

Good Morning!

After a very busy Saturday and Sunday I have time to look at some weather data and see what's in store for the next few days.  From the perch here, two words come to mind.  Mild and dry.  Let's pop the hood and see what we have running in there for the next few days!

SUMMARY:  Not a whole lot going on.  Temperatures remain in the low to mid 50's, about 10 degrees warmer than we should be heading into the holiday season.  We'll climb into the upper 50's and maybe see a 60 in a spot or two as well.  Varying degrees of cloudiness throughout south central Michigan, going from mainly clear to overcast in periods over the next several days. Not much chance for any rain to fall out of the clouds we do see though, thanks to fairly dry air in this part of the world.  All of the weather worries stay confined to the Pacific Northwest and southwest Canada.  Here's a look at the current surface temperatures around this great nation at this hour:

Current computer modeling suggests just a hint of a chance at some rain heading into midweek, then we're quiet again until Black Friday and the kickoff of the holiday season.  Wednesday, the busiest travel day of the year looks to be uneventful on the weather side, unless your travel takes you out toward Washington state, Idaho, Montana or British Columbia.  Thursday evening, while you're sleeping off your turkey dinner and watching some football or relaxing with the family, a cold front advances through the area, knocking 10 degrees or so off the temperatures and creating some late night shower activity.  Black Friday brings us scattered showers early, then clouds and cooler as you perhaps get a jump on your holiday shopping.  Here's a look at the current satellite image:

Visible Satellite Image
RAIN:  As I indicated in the summary above, you won't see a whole lot of it in this part of the world, if the forecast modeling has it right.  Just a slight bit of energy in an upper wave that moves through late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, but I'm not seeing enough moisture in the air at that point to do much, and truthfully, forecast models aren't very convinced about rain either.  Let's take a look at the National Weather Service five day map:

5 Day Precipitation Forecast
Maybe an outside chance of a stray shower Tuesday night into Wednesday, and that's about it until Friday.  Early Friday, some spots may see a few stray showers, and it will be cooler.  I'm thinking that will taper off before you get into the heart of the day Friday, leaving just clouds and highs topping out in the low or middle 40's.  We don't need a severe discussion as the Storm Prediction Center isn't expecting anything organized and severe the next three days anywhere in the continental US.

Here's a look at the temperatures closer to home:

And here's the forecast for Jackson and surrounding areas including Leslie and Concord:

Today, sunshine and clouds mix together, unseasonably mild, high of 58, don't be surprised to see some spots hit 60 though, winds SE 3-8 MPH.

Tonight, clouds roll in keeping the thermometers from dipping too much, expect lows around 40 under the cloudy skies with winds SSW calm to 5 MPH.  Don't be shocked to see some fog form in the area as well.

Tuesday, cloudy skies, we'll add a small chance at a stray shower through the afternoon hours, a touch cooler than Monday, high 55, winds variable to 5 MPH.

Tuesday night, clearing skies temperatures drop to near 40 again, winds swing to the SE calm to 5 MPH.

Wednesday, periods of clouds and sun followed by clearing, continued unusually mild, high 56.

Thanksgiving Day, give thanks for sunny skies and mild, temperature near 58.

Black Friday, cloudy skies with a few scattered showers early, then cloudy and cooler, highs top out at 46.

Saturday, a mix of clouds and sunshine, cooler temperatures fall back to more seasonable levels with a high of only 40.

Sunday, skies continue partly sunny, with a high of 42.

There's a look at your forecast for the next six days here in the South Central Michigan Weather Zone.  I do hope that you have a great day!  Blessings.

Quick Look For Monday...

Good Morning!

Quiet and mild.  That about sums up the weather in this part of the world for the next few days.  Let's take a look at my forecast for today and you'll see what I mean:
